Stretching

I have a deep passion for how the human body moves (kinesiology) through biomechanics, strength & conditioning, physical therapy, and exercise. In 2001, after earning a BS in Psychology, I pursued and completed a Personal Training certification. I have worked as a successful personal trainer for over 10 years (AFPA Certified).

Through the years that I have been treating clients, I have worked with varying issues/needs such as spinal degeneration, frozen shoulder, weight loss goals, nutritional challenges, postural imbalances, and conditioning goals. As my want to help each of my clients increased, so did my desire to seek the education to facilitate them.  In 2004 I pursued a MS in Kinesiology at Cal Poly Pomona University, combining my background in psychology with fitness.

Over the years I also have attended many seminars on movement and exercise, which lead me to explore the work of Joseph Pilates. In 2009 and 2010 I completed over 120 hours of intensive Pilates certification training at the Long Beach Dance Conditioning Center in Southern California with Master instructor and presenter Marie Jose'-Blom.

With my knowledge of Pilates and its benefits I now specialize in improving and strengthening postural imbalances with corrective exercises to boost performance and/or alleviate pain. I enjoy being able to offer a form of exercise that is low impact for those in need of flexibility and injury/pain rehabilitation.

During your Reformer Pilates workout I also perform some massage work to promote muscular flexibility and joint stability. I realize that movement alone is not enough to create balance and strength in the body and therefore I incorporate various massage techniques such as Myofascial Release, Compressive Deep Tissue, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, and Craniosacral therapy.

Let me supply you with the tools necessary to accomplish your fitness goals through Pilates.  As your instructor it is my goal to provide you with unparalleled standards of quality, as well as safe and effective methods of training.

Equipment Pilates is a safe, yet challenging way to develop a strong, balanced core. Core strength is an important part of an exercise program because a body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to become injured. Pilates is a therapeutic method of exercise that can be modified for beginner, intermediate and advanced students.

I specialize in improving and strengthening postural imbalances with corrective Pilates exercises to boost performance and/or alleviate pain. By emphasizing proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and concentration on fluid movements, Pilates elongates and strengthens muscles, improving flexibility and joint health.

You will receive an individualized exercise program based on an assessment of your health and fitness concerns, posture, and strength levels. Your program is designed carefully to meet those needs, and it is progressed according to your goals and fitness ability.

Working out regularly with an instructor is a fun and safe way to stay motivated and accountable for your workouts. I believe in the importance of self-improvement, enhanced by a learning environment that is not only enjoyable, but is inspirational. I want you to be empowered to take care of your body with the knowledge and tools I provide you with!

Each session will begin with utilizing the breath to establish a mind-body connection to help create spinal length and alignment. As your practice progresses, so will your awareness of your core, body alignment/posture and movement ability. Pilates can be a meditative practice as well as time for self-exploration. Please always remember to be patient with your body's ability to move, as well as your mind's ability to connect with the body...it doesn't happen overnight!

**Socks with a non-slip bottom are required during Reformer workouts and all Barre group classes. I have socks for sale or I recommend that you purchase any style of yoga toe sox such as those found at:

I also offer a form of Pilates for equestrians of all disciplines and riding abilities. The benefits of Pilates are applied to you as a rider to teach proper riding form and to improve your experience as a rider.

One of the goals of this form of Pilates is to increase your core stability and strength through muscle memory, which brings more awareness to your riding posture. Flexibility and balance are also emphasized during your workout to help allow the whole body to handle the stress of riding, to keep you the rider comfortable and healthy, and to achieve your desired level of performance. Pilates exercises are individualized for each rider to increase overall health, to address particular riding issues, to gain balance over jumps, to decrease muscle soreness, and more. A strong rider creates the same qualities in their horse!

Stretching Sessions

Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) is based on physiological principles of specific muscle lengthening, increased circulation, and oxygen to the tissues which promotes lengthening of the superficial and deep fascia.

Performing an Active Isolated Stretch of no longer than two seconds allows the target muscles to optimally lengthen without triggering the protective stretch reflex and subsequent reciprocal antagonistic muscle contraction as the isolated muscle achieves a state of relaxation. These stretches provide maximum benefit and can be accomplished without opposing tension or resulting trauma.

Shannan utilizes this method in her 25-minute individual stretching sessions to increase flexibility and open up tight areas. This method can be very therapeutic for such issues as carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet syndrome, tendonitis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, back problems, and neuropathy, to name a few.

25 minute session $30

Bodywork

Shannan is certified in a variety of techniques including Myoskeletal Alignment, Muscle Energy Techniques, Myofascial Release, Compressive Deep Tissue, and Craniosacral Therapy.

Deep Pressure Bodywork: Pain Relief/Muscular Balancing
Deep tissue (friction) techniques, stretching techniques, and muscular manipulation are used to target areas of muscle tension and pain related to a specific problem. This deep pressure technique will break down muscle adhesions in order to increase circulation and restore normal range of motion.

60 minutes $80
90 minutes $110
